The LA County Fair is a major annual event in the California area. First held in 1922 in a beet field in Pomona, where highlights included chariot racing, harness races and a wing walking exhibition, the fair has grown since then to become one of the largest and most popular county fairs in the entire United States. With only one exception, in every year since 1948 the numbers of people attending the fair have been more than one million, making it the fourth largest county fair event in the country. If you will be staying in downtown Los Angeles plan a trip to the fair!
In its primary role, the fair connects the agricultural and farming communities with the public, offering a unique gathering place for the community in which visitors can learn about the history and heritage of California and farming in the area, whilst also enjoying entertainment and activities designed for children. More recent fairs have had petting zoos and areas for youngsters to come face to face with animals, rather than a focus on the livestock competitions which dominated historic fairs. This years’ animal attractions also include a special feature Beneath The Sea: An Underwater Adventure complete with shark and stingray encounters and the sea lion show – as well as the traditional Pig Races!
The 2013 event is bigger than ever. Being held August 30th to September 29th, the programme is full of activities from the popular Demolition Derby (September 26th) to Star Trek: The Exhibition and everything in between, from Chinese acrobatics to the Culinary Skills Kitchen and flower shows. In addition, the End of Summer Concert Series has attracted big names, including The Bangles, The Jacksons, Ke$ha, Demi Lovato, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Los Lobos and Bad Company. Elsewhere, on the Coca Cola stage, tribute acts will be performing top hits from a wide range of celebrities, including Gwen Stefani (by the act Gwen In Doubt), Elton John and Stevie Wonder (by the act Timeless Wonder) and will also be the location for the Battle Of The Bands: an opportunity for up and coming local acts to present their music for a chance to perform on a concert tour in the new year.
