Affectionately known as ‘the granddaddy of them all,’ the Rose Bowl Game has been taking place since 1902 and has launched the careers of numerous college football players. Since its launch, the Rose Bowl Game has shown off the skills of seventeen Heisman Trophy Winners and created twenty nine national champions. What started over a century ago as the first post-season game in the country has transformed into today’s enormous event, which is the oldest post-season bowl agreement pact between two major US conferences. Making history once more, the 100th Annual Rose Bowl Game will be taking place on January 1st 2014, following the Rose Bowl Parade, and being broadcast on ESPN and ESPN Radio. When it kicks off, the Michigan State Spartans will take on the Stanford Cardinals to see who will take home the prize.
Michigan State Spartans are the Champions of the Big Ten Conference, and this will be the fifth time that a team from Michigan State are in the Rose Bowl match. Historically, the Michigan State Spartans have met the Stanford Cardinals five times, leading the records with three wins to two. This year’s team is strong, having won eleven of its last thirteen games in the Big Ten Conference and leading the conference in its scoring defence, rushing defence, total defence and pass defence categories. Led by Coach Mark Dantonio, now in his seventh year leading the team, Michigan State Spartans are looking solid in the run up to the match and will be looking forward to their first appearance in the Rose Bowl since 1987.Stanford Cardinals were the strong winners of the Pac-12 Conference and are also the defending champions of the Rose Bowl competition. This double appearance is the first time the Cardinals have played in two consecutive Rose Bowls since 1970 and 1971 and as reigning champions, they are looking to hold on to their title. Again, they have had an excellent season in the Pac-12 Conference, beating strong teams from Oregon, Arizona State and UCLA.
Following the Rose Bowl game will be the Vizio BCS National Championship game taking place at the Rose Bowl Stadium on January 6, 2014. Throughout the football season, college teams are given a BCS ranking and the two highest-ranked teams compete head to head in the final game bowl game of the series. The teams competing this year are Florida State and Auburn University, who are sure to engage in a match that is not to be missed! Florida State has had an impressive 13 wins this season, while Auburn has only faced one loss (to LSU) this season. Football fans from all over the country will gather together to cheer on the two teams and witness for themselves a true showdown!
